For youth between the ages of 10 and 24 years living in Africa, Asia and South America, a better future lies ahead: a better future in relation to sexual and reproductive health and rights. This is the aim of the new strategic partnership between Minister Ploumen and Rutgers, Hivos, Choice, Dance4life and three regional networks in the South.

How to make your E/M health strategy sustainable? What are effective strategies in increasing the utilization of services among youth? What are the pros and cons of working with young co-researchers? These were some of the questions that were addressed during the ASK Operational Research Symposium that took place in Kisumu, Kenya in May 2015. The ASK programme – Access, Services, Knowledge – targets key elements in meeting young people’s needs.

Recently Malawian Chief Mrs. Kachindamoto featured prominently in the media as she annulled over 300 child marriages. The traditional leader applied a new law which forbids marriage before girls are 18 and sent the girls back to school.

In a recent survey carried out by Keystone Accountability Rutgers partner organisations rate Rutgers 9th out of 70 international NGOs (INGOs) worldwide and 4th out of 10 of Dutch INGOs in terms of ‘overall satisfaction’.

In October an expert meeting took place in Pretoria (South Africa) on SRHR education and HIV prevention programmes for adolescents and young people. For three days 100 people, from 18 different countries, working with and for young people and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and HIV prevention had the opportunity to link policy and practice. In 'Young and in Control' 7 young people from different countries in Africa and Asia show the importance of the active participation of themselves and their peers in the ASK programme. From 11 to 20 July, governments from around the world will gather at the United Nations in New York for the High-level Political Forum (HLPF). At this site, they will discuss yearly progress on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The HLPF 2016 is particularly special as it is the first one to take place since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Rineke van Dam, Advocacy Officer at Rutgers, will be participating as member of the official delegation of the government of the Netherlands.

The Youth Week organized by Share-Net Netherlands and its members takes place from 26th – 30th of September at Humanity House, The Hague and De Balie, Amsterdam.

This November, the Nairobi Summit took place in Kenya. Young advocate, Ligia DeStephen from Honduras attended, as part of our Right Here Right Now (RHRN) programme. Ligia looks back at an inspirational experience in Nairobi, and will continue to hold her government to account for the commitments it made during the Summit.
