On May 19th Rutgers will give a special lesson on sexuality education to a committee from the Dutch Parliament, which has caused quite a stir. Rutgers will be accompanied by sexologist and television personality Goedele Liekens and a group of students. During the lesson Rutgers will promote the idea that empowerment should become an integral part of the primary goals i in education regarding sexuality and relationships. Rutgers hopes that the Netherlands will continue to encourage other countries to address this issue as well.

A lot has been achieved for the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of young people, but there are still mountains to be moved. On 17 May, the Dutch SRHR Alliance and youth leaders from all over the world presented the results of two large-scale youth programmes and called for action. As Ayantu Terefe from Ethiopia put it: “More dreams need to come true.”

From 11 to 20 July, governments from around the world will gather at the United Nations in New York for the High-level Political Forum (HLPF). At this site, they will discuss yearly progress on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The HLPF 2016 is particularly special as it is the first one to take place since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Rineke van Dam, Advocacy Officer at Rutgers, will be participating as member of the official delegation of the government of the Netherlands.

JOIN the Amsterdam EuroPride 2016 from July 23rd till August 7th. Over 300 events will take place in Amsterdam during the 16-days festival, including the world-famous Canal Parade (August 6th).

The Youth Week organized by Share-Net Netherlands and its members takes place from 26th – 30th of September at Humanity House, The Hague and De Balie, Amsterdam.

We have launched a campaign #HappyBirthControl asking public to show support for contraceptive access worldwide.

This statement has been jointly prepared by 81 sex worker rights, women’s rights, and human rights organizations (list still in formation). We are writing this statement in response to UN Women’s call for submissions in an e-consultation about the development of a UN Women policy on sex work. A number of sex workers’, women’s and human rights organizations have been engaging with UN Women for some months about this proposed policy, stressing the importance of a process that meaningfully engages with a broad range of sex workers’ and women’s rights organizations as essential to the process of developing a policy. Rutgers is one of the organisations which endorses this statement.

Rutgers is pleased about Minister Ploumen’s initiative to counter the effects of the Global Gag Rule. She shows that in the best of Dutch tradition, we would like the Netherlands to take the lead in fighting for sexual and reproductive health and rights. President Trump’s decision to stop donors financing all charities and funds that may only touch on abortion, will affect millions of women and girls. Ploumen’s proposal is therefore very much needed, indeed.

Most Dutch people are happy with their sex lives according to a large-scale study carried out by Rutgers. That more men than women enjoy sex is one of the main results shown in the study Sexual Health in The Netherlands 2017 which was published January 15th 2018. In particular, men over 70 and women below 25 experience sexual problems. The results also confirm that sexual coercion occurs frequently. A substantial number of homosexual and bisexual men have ever been verbally abused due to their sexual orientation. Furthermore, almost everyone agrees that sexual education should be obligatory in school.
