Research
Rutgers is the independent centre of knowledge and expertise on sexual health in the Netherlands. We work both nationally and internationally to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights.
Through our research, we generate reliable evidence that helps people make informed decisions about their bodies, lives and relationships.
Our research provides valuable insights into sexual health, safety and wellbeing. It informs policy development, supports education and awareness programmes and ensures that our work is evidence-based and effective. By grounding our interventions in research, we can make sure they are relevant, impactful and responsive to people’s needs.
At a time when misinformation and disinformation about sexual health are widespread, we provide independent and trustworthy knowledge.

Key features of our approach:
- Participatory – young people and other target groups are actively involved in shaping and conducting research.
- Practice-oriented – our research is grounded in people’s lived experiences and real-world contexts.
- Collaborative – we work closely with partners in the Netherlands and around the world.
- Rigorous and ethical – all research is conducted in line with scientific and ethical standards.
From research to impact
We believe that knowledge should lead to action. That is why we share our findings through:
- Publications and reports

- Events, training sessions and presentations
In this way, our research contributes to policy, professional practice and public debate.
