As young people grow up in an increasingly digital world, sexuality, relationships and self-image are shaped not only in classrooms, but also online. Social media and digital platforms play a central role in how young people explore intimacy, identity and connection.
In the Netherlands, this reality is addressed through Week of Love — a national education week that supports secondary and vocational schools in teaching about relationships and sexuality. During the week, schools use evidence-based and inclusive teaching materials to discuss topics such as consent, boundaries, diversity and sexual health. In 2026, the programme places a strong emphasis on online sexuality, sexting and the influence of social media on young people’s self-image.
This year, a record number of schools are participating, showing growing recognition of the importance of relationship and sexuality education that reflects young people’s online and offline lives.
Research shows that many young people turn to the internet or peers for information about sexuality, where the reliability of information is often unclear. At the same time, schools recognise the importance of relationship and sexuality education but often struggle to embed it structurally.
The Dutch experience shows what’s possible when schools are properly supported. Relationship and sexuality education helps young people make more conscious choices, supports respectful relationships and contributes to safer school environments, particularly for LGBTQI+ students.
While the context may be Dutch, the lesson is universal: supporting young people in navigating sexuality online is essential — and schools need the right tools to do it well.
