Executive summary – The reality of unsafe abortion in Togo

This qualitative study, titled “Inside the maze women face: the reality of unsafe abortions in Togo,” explores the lived experiences of adolescent girls and women confronted with unplanned pregnancies that they cannot carry to term.

Through personal accounts, the report highlights the many obstacles they face, including stigma, shame, silence, health risks, and legal restrictions. It shows how these factors influence their decisions and experiences.

The study also emphasizes the impact of laws, social pressures, and health inequalities on access to safe abortion services and post-abortion care. These constraints have direct consequences on the well-being, health, and lives of the adolescent girls and women affected.
