Out of the maze: expanding access to safe abortion in Benin

This qualitative study explores the experiences and access of adolescent girls and women with safe abortion care since the introduction of legal reform in 2021.

This qualitative study explores how adolescent girls and women experience safe abortion care in Benin and how access has changed since the introduction of legal reform in 2021.

Drawing on personal stories and ethnographic analysis, the report examines the changes brought about by the legal reform, as well as the barriers that remain. While access to abortion care has improved, stigma, social constraints, lack of information and difficulties accessing healthcare continue to shape women’s experiences and limit equitable access to safe abortion and post-abortion care.

The study also looks at how the legal reform has been implemented and what this means for the women and adolescent girls seeking care.
